George,

I feel very grateful you posted this well-written and concise article.  I had a task on my Prioritized Daily Task List in Microsoft Outlook that had languished for weeks called "Write SOLO Article on Why Clubs Should Move."  You have captured in this article the essentials of what I sought to convey.  Thank you!

George,

This may seem like an odd thing to say, but I found your article strangely moving. You've just captured the essence of what SOLO is about in a way I'm not sure has been done before. Congratulations - and thank you :-)

George, I think you've done a wonderful job at pointing out why this site is so refreshingly unique.  What a cast of characters we are.  :)

Warm regards,
Jennifer

P.S.  Luther, one of these days I'm going to hire you to organize my Outlook program for me.  :)

Great article George. In addition to rigorous Objectivist debate you'll find just about anything on this site. Passion, romance, comedy, drama, music, food, capitalism, and SEX! What more could you want?

Jennifer,

I don't remember if you have a Mac or not (you seem like one of us Mac users, or a least a likely candidate) but if you do, try using iCal, Mail, and Address book. They are a lot easier to use, and have some features that Microsoft doesn't have (or didn't have last time I looked) such as the Mail program can organize emails by thread. Damn, I sound like a cheesy PR rep. :)

Mr. Cordero,

Thanks for the article. A few days ago, while following a thread here, I was disgusted to see an interesting discussion getting off the topic and becoming a series of personal attacks. I almost decided to sign off from the site. But, when I considered it again, it was not difficult to discover that the net value of this forum, in a qualitative sense, was positive. I stayed.

Adam, Luther,
Okay, now that you have advertised for Mac and the Outlook, should I do that for Mozilla Thunderbird?:)

I like you guys. I’m having a lot of fun. My posts should remain “moderated” indefinitely, and watched closer.

Maybe someone could be assigned the task of letting me know when a thread has degenerated sufficiently to allow the new guy to give expression to his gutter tendencies?

Jon

Jon, I think you're going to blend right in.  Ha!

Adam, I did start out on a Mac, but was forced into PC slavery by my former company.  They gave me the laptop as a parting gift, however, so I'm not about to complain.  :)  I've actually found PCs more pleasant in the long run, despite my traumatic Dell Disasters.  (Hard drive erase, anyone?  Oops.)  There is more available for PCs.  Mac support, however, cannot be beaten.  (Read hard drive comment above.)

I also like the Firefox browser, but am frustrated with some of its limitations.

Sorry for the tangent.  Back to our regularly scheduled arguing.

PS - Folks, I must apologize for this article sounding more like an advertisement than anything else. That was not my intent.

(Hmmmm? I lied, that was my intent.)

And what a fine advertisement that was!

I once said of The Free Radical that it was "simultaneously infuriating and enlightening, but always provocative.  It is an entertaining forum for the colorful exchange of ideas, a place where advocates of the free society can argue about everything from theory to strategy."  Is it any wonder that the guy who made TFR possible, has also made SOLO possible?  Yeah, he can enlighten---and infuriate too.  But thanks to his foresight, we can all have a little fun now and then.

Good piece, George.

This random article by George Cordero, who doesnt post as often as I wish he did, popped up as a random article. Given recent goings on here, it could not have come at a better time.

Thanks George.

For my first post on the site I just want to express a personal belief that is 100% right (just like me)... for me... and everyone else too.  Hehehehe.  While on this site embrace Objectivism and take from it whatever you may find appealing, whether it be a particular article's conceptual analysis or even a single joke that is so idiotic that you cannot help but to laugh.  Allowing the ignorance of another to limit you in any way whatsoever is intolerable.  Permitting that same mentality to obligatorily guide your actions is an even greater injustice.  I am a gay man and even if Ayn Rand looked me square in the eye and let me know exactly how she felt about homosexuals just before she spat in my face, it wouldn't deter me from pursuing her writings.

Donna Summer had a horrible rumor spread shortly after she was "born again" to the effect of her disapproving of the 'lifestyles' practiced in the Gay Community.  I love her voice and her music.  I always have, I always will.  Other gays couldn't understand this concept of taking what you like and rejecting what you dislike.  (Mmm Hmm...  Prima Donna f@gs that act as though they have never dined at The Sizzler and circled the buffet islands like vultures. *scoff*)  Deprive myself the hours and hours of enjoyment of an amazing voice because, by default, others perceive your musical preferences as embracing that specific artist's ideas, convictions and beliefs?  How many Jews do you know that live like the Amish and refuse to touch a $100 bill?  Benjamin Franklin was never strong-armed into apologizing for his very public messages published in his anti-Semitic newspaper.  He made statements such as, "America has the chance to be a nation filled up with the glorious WHITE, free of all colored races..." and I would not expect non-Caucasians to live without electricity because refraining from doing so is an endorsement to all of Mr. Franklin's small-minded, primitive, @$$backwards views.  (I am, oh so, very judgmental, by the way.)

The moral of the post:  "When in Rome..."

Enjoy the site and be an Objectivist while you're here!  I also recommend that you think of yourself as the best Jack-Mormon on the planet, when you visit a site for the Church of Latter Day Saints too.  Embracing that which you do not understand or are unfamiliar with is as temporary as you wish it to be, so feel free to annul any/all of these marriages that do not work out and enjoy this acceptable form of polygamy.  No matter how you look at it, you walk away with more than you had to start.

-Solo, still standing on his soap box.

SF:

The "quote" you attribute to Benjamin Franklin is a forgery penned not less than 100 years after his death, as is clear from its vocabulary and usage.

Thanks for clarifying... It was a cut and paste, and because of the general message I was trying to convey (actually I was arguing with myself about adding and NOT adding any more people and then leading me down THAT path...  you know the one...  the one that takes me far away from atheism to Woody-woodpecker-land) I hadn't bothered to hunt down materials I've drawn from before.  See?  That's what I get for looking to the Jews to have my back on this one.  *blush*  (I knew I should've just stopped at Ayn Rand, but NO!  'Do Donna too...' 'Okay, b!tc#, now let's move on,' 'NO!  Do Benny too...' And now look at me...  just a bloody and scabby mess thanks to the fall from the... soap box.  I'm sure glad I didn't put myself on the pedistal just yet.)  *wink*

Thanks Adam.  I HATE you, but only in a giddy way.  *air kisses*
