Britain's education secretary backs ID card bill
Posted by Marc Geddes on 4/29/2004, 1:30am
The Education Secretary will throw his weight behind a controversial draft bill unveiled yesterday by David Blunkett which could make it compulsory for everyone in Britain over 16 -except the Queen - to carry a biometric ID card by 2013.
...
"The move to compulsion is the logical outcome of people being comfortable with ID cards," said Mr Blunkett. "I am in favour of compulsion." The bill does not set a date for compulsory ID cards to be introduced, but Mr Blunkett expects it to come in 2013 when 80 per cent of the country may have been persuaded to take out voluntary cards.
