Good recommendation, Matthew! I especially loved Harry's idea of justice ("Have you ever killed anyone?" "Yeah, but they were all bad.") and the fact that this movie made villains of Arab terrorists instead of cowering and capitulating to multiculturalism.

MH,
I agree that it's an enjoyable diversion but it's mental bubblegum.  Like all hollow vessels it is noisy and carries little weight.

I personally can't see how any films in the action or horror genres could possibly be appropriate for inclusion in a SOLO list. It's like interrupting a discussion of fine wines with a recommendation to try a brand of cola.

Or, do you think I'm being a grump?

Tim

yah, i prefer cola to wine, you jerk!

but i didn't really like this movie. it was ok, but nothing special.

"Good recommendation, Matthew! I especially loved Harry's idea of justice ("Have you ever killed anyone?" "Yeah, but they were all bad.") and the fact that this movie made villains of Arab terrorists instead of cowering and capitulating to multiculturalism."

you know, i heard somewhere (maybe this forum) that the new manchurian candidate has a multi-national corporation as the villain, instead of commies, or islamics, or something reasonable.

i just watched the old one yesterday. that was a pretty good movie. his mother sure was rotten...

Tim: Little one, in this context it was an analogy not a value judgement. Still, this kind of OTT response is exactly what I'd expect from an action movie watching cola drinker. :)

And didn't you just love the part in "The Romantic Manifesto" where it talks about body counts being an objective way to establish the value of a movie. No wait, I was getting confused...(!)

Tim,

Out of interest, have you actually seen this movie?

Yep, I quite liked it. But this was an occasion when I wanted my brain in neutral. I am a bit worried that some people are not making the distinction between a movie that they like and one that has SOLO-esque qualities.

Fair enough view. But I think I made clear in my review what I found "SOLOesque" about it.

well, i never read the romantic manifesto. i have it, just haven't read it yet...

also, someone told me once (and i thought it was pretty funny in the end): don't use TLA's.

not that i listened to him, it doesn't fit with my lazy style.

well, i'm off,

Thanks, Matthew.

True Lies is my favorite Schwartzenegger movie.

I read that before he made it, he looked at the culture and decided to do something positive for it based on his deepest moral beliefs. So he went to the Hollywood people and said that he wanted his next movie to be one promoting family values. They of course told their huge box office draw something along the lines of "Hey, we love ya, Arnold! We're behind you 1000%! Er, by the way, have you noticed that all of your movies that made money were action-adventure blockbusters?" But Arnold stuck to his guns, and so they put their heads together and decided to create an action-adventure blockbuster that would promote family values. The result was True Lies.

Of course, stories about how movies are made are always written by the publicists, so take that with a huge grain of salt.

After the 2002 TOC summer conference at UCLA I stopped in downtown LA and took a picture of the hotel elevator where the horse scene was filmed. It bears a plaque saying it was used in the movie.

well, in case anyone was interested (you were supposed to ask...) TLA's are:

three letter accronyms.

the guy told me "don't use TLA's" to express the point that people don't know what they mean often, but i use them anyway.

Movie re-makes (or, as Tim Burton prefers 're-imaginings') seem to have been a Hollywood fad the last decade, for better (Batman Begins) or worse (Psycho).

Now, I really can't picture anyone doing such with any of James Cameron's movies, nor even Schwarzenegger's. NTL, mewonders how True Lies might be Politically-Corrected were it re-imagined nowadays. The Yakuza (they're 'safe,' no?) want Nukes to take care of the Tongs, maybe?

I've watched "True Lies" three maybe four times and really enjoyed it every time. Non-stop action, hilarious, everyone in this movie was obviously having a good time. Think I'll go watch it again.... Oops. Better wait 'til I get off work.

Matthew, thanks for the lunch time mental vacation. : )

About soloesque: Humor is not solo material? How about larger than life self confidence and kicking the shit out of the bad guys? And Romance!

Back to work.
